Affordable Care Act Coverage

All plans purchased through the ACA (Marketplace plans) and many other plans must cover the following list of preventive services without charging you a copayment or coinsurance. This is true even if you haven’t met your yearly deductible. This applies only when these services are delivered by a network provider. For more information go to www.healthcare.gov.

Sexual Health Service
Affordable Care Act Coverage
Cervical cancer screening For women ages 21 to 29, get a Pap test every 3 years.

For women ages 30 to 65, get screened every 3 to 5 years based on your provider’s recommendation.

Chlamydia screening Annual screening for sexually active women ages 24 and younger, including those who are pregnant.

Annually for women ages 25 and over who are at risk, including those who are pregnant.

Contraceptive counseling and methods For women of reproductive capacity. Includes patient education and counseling, FDA-approved contraceptive methods and sterilization procedures.
Gonorrhea screening Annual screening for sexually active women ages 24 and younger, including those who are pregnant.

Annually for women ages 25 and over who are at risk, including those who are pregnant.

Hepatitis A vaccine For all children ages 12 months and older.

For other recommended populations.

Hepatitis B vaccine For all infants, starting with the first dose at birth.

For all children and adolescents younger than 19 years of age who were not vaccinated at birth.

For other recommended populations.

Hepatitis B screening For all persons at risk.

For pregnant women at their first prenatal visit.

Hepatitis C screening For adults at risk.

One-time screening for adults born between 1945 and 1965.

HIV screening For everyone ages 15 to 65 get tested at least once.

For those at risk get tested more frequently.

For pregnant women.

HPV vaccine A two-dose series for girls 11-14 and a three-dose series for females ages 15 to 26 not vaccinated when younger.

A two-dose series for boys 11-14 and a three-dose series for males ages 15 to 21 not vaccinated when younger. May also be given to males ages 22 to 26 (check with your provider).

Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs): Behavioral Counseling For all sexually active adolescents.

For adults at risk.

Syphilis screening  For all pregnant women.

For adults at risk.

How Do I Know if I’m at Risk?

Your sexual health is at risk if you answer “yes” to any of the following questions:

  • Have you had unprotected vaginal, anal, or oral sex (sex without a condom)?
  • Do you have multiple partners?
  • Do you have an STI, including HIV?
  • Have you shared injection drug equipment, including needles or syringes?
  • Do you exchange sex for drugs or money?
  • Do you have a partner who answers “yes” to any of these questions or whose health status you don’t know?
